Tom Holkenborg Revives Junkie XL Alias For EP on Sasha’s Last Night On Earth

He took a break from electronic music to focus on doing soundtracks for blockbuster movies like Mad Max and Deadpool.

It’s been nine years since Tom Holkenborg last released under his Junkie XL alias.

In those years, Holkenborg has become one of Hollywood’s pre-eminent film composers, working on projects like Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Mad Max: Fury Road, Deadpool and Alita: Battle Angel, collaborating with directors like Robert Rodriguez, James Cameron, Zack Snyder, George Miller, Tim Miller and Peter Jackson.

While working on the Netflix series White Lines set in Ibiza, Tom was inspired to revisit his dance music past. He wrote a series of tracks that he sent to old friend Sasha for feedback, and after playing the tracks out, Sasha asked to release them on his label Last Night On Earth.

“These tracks were something fun and personal for me, a chance to stretch my dancefloor muscles again, after recalling so many of my Ibiza memories during White Lines,” said Holkenborg. “They are quite different from the classic Junkie XL sound, and I never had any intention of releasing them, but when Sasha asked me too, I couldn’t say no.”

Holkenborg has had a long association with Sasha from early in his Junkie XL career and was honoured to help produce Sasha’s 2002 acclaimed debut album Airdrawndagger. Later they also collaborated to release the seminal progressive track Breezer. Sasha was an early champion of Junkie XL in the dance scene and played one of his tracks on the classic Global Underground Ibiza compilation CD that he mixed.

As Junkie XL, Holkenborg has released six albums and toured as a live act between 1995 and 2014. He has also collaborated with artists ranging from Gary Numan to Madonna, and famously topped charts around the world with his remix of Elvis Presley’s ‘A Little Less Conversation.

The single ‘A Fluff Scam’ is out today on Last Night On Earth, and that will be followed by a five-track EP on December 10th.
