March the 8th marks International Women’s Day, and here at Flow Music we have decided to celebrate by highlighting five up-and-coming female techno artists.
The electronic music industry has been making great strides towards achieving gender equality. It’s crazy to think that at points in the past, a female DJ might have been considered a novelty, and we are glad that those sad days are moving into the rear-view mirror.
Although we are getting closer to a 50/50 split of gender equality, we understand that there are still strides that need to be taken. This of course includes gender equality for non-binary individuals who deserve to be treated with no less respect than anyone else.
Lots of events and festivals now push for an even split between the genders of their line-up, and some record labels are trying to do the same.
There is occasionally backlash from males who feel that women DJs are sometimes getting all the opportunities for fresh talent, and positive discrimination for something makes it harder for males to break through in comparison to female DJ’s.
In regards to the above statement, we think that men get just as many opportunities. If people feel like women are taking over, it’s only because females are proving that electronic music is not limited to any single gender. Cream rises to the top, and right now the girls are proving that their skills can easily match the boys.
At the end of the day, I think we can all agree that it’s about quality of music, and good music is good music regardless of what’s between someone’s legs, or how they choose to identify.
We understand that there is still some way to go before a perfect balance of gender equality has been reached, but today is a day to focus on the positive steps being made in the electronic music industry.
