Australia’s Cockatoo Island Intends To Become A Major Culture Destination

Located just off the coast of Sydney, the plans could allow for festivals and warehouse raves.

Cockatoo Island is the largest in Sydney, Australia and there are plans proposed to turn it into a major destination for arts and culture destination for locals and international tourists.

According to the ABC plans have been put forward by The Harbour Trust for the island which is UNESCO World Heritage-listed.

What’s proposed for the island that has indigenous heritage features art, retail, dining and education spaces with a focus on “First Nations culture and significance as a sacred women’s place” as well as its past as a penal colony.

Harbour Trust chair, Joseph Carrozzi said “What we would like to do is make sure this island becomes a must-see destination,” with an already impressive head start as a stand-out feature of Sydney harbour.

Notes inside the plans imply that it could be possible to host contemporary events on the island which could include large scale warehouse-sized parties or even entire festivals.

The plans are on public display in Sydney between now and June 11th. If this goes ahead, then many would consider it another positive step forward for Sydney.

Other plans to modernise the Sydney area include revitalising Kings Cross, and a $43.5m overhaul of George Street to give pedestrians more priority.

There is also the YCK Laneways project that we covered a few weeks ago, and you can find out more about that HERE
