The World’s Longest Working DJ Has Retired After A 70-Year Career

Ray Cordeiro is a 96-year-old who spent most of his life working in Hong Kong as a radio broadcaster.

Ray Cordeiro

Ray Cordeiro hosted the show ‘All The Way With Ray’ until 2021.

Last month, 96-year-old Ray Cordeiro decided to hang up his headphones for the last time. The Hong Kong radio host started his love of music from a young age, when as a child he took early inspiration from his older brother’s record collection.

Early in his working life, he secured a position at Radio Hong Kong, which is now renamed to Radio Television Hong Kong.

Ray Cordeiro made a name for himself in the ’60s when he relocated to the UK for three months in 1964. During his stay in England, he secured the opportunity to interview The Beatles, after the bold move of showing up unannounced at the offices of their record label EMI. It was so impromptu, he didn’t even have his own tape recorder, and had to borrow one to conduct the interview.

Later in his career, he would speak with The Beatles again when the band visited Hong Kong on tour. That conversation with the world’s most successful band helped solidify the broadcaster’s career, and in 1970, he was given his own show All The Way With Ray.

All The Way With Ray continued until 2021, and giving an interview to ABC News about his decision to retire, Ray Cordeiro explained: “I fulfilled my work as a DJ, did what I had to do and the audience followed me, grew up with me, and they’re all over the world now.”

In the interview with ABC News, he was asked if he would make the same career choices again, and replied: “the answer is yes.”

Although music has evolved since the ’60s, which is a time before electronic music such as house or techno had even been conceived. It’s people like Ray Cordeiro who helped lay the foundation for today’s music culture, and we wish him all the best with his retirement.
