Catz ‘N Dogz are a duo of Polish electronic music artists who are well-known for their releases on labels such as Dirtybird, Diynamic and Defected.
Their eclectic style fuses soulful, deep and techy elements to create tracks that have a party starting vibe and infectious groove, and this also translates into the guys’ charismatic DJ sets.
Along with travelling the world as headline DJs, the duo also run Pets Recordings, which is an influential record label that along with their own music, has featured other artists ranging from Eats Everything to Harry Romero.
Most recently, Catz ‘N Dogz dropped a two-track release on Club Sweat, which was a double A-side featuring Raymoane and Kiddy Smile. Keen to learn more about this new release and their passions outside of music, we caught up with the guys for this interview…
Hi guys, it’s great to talk to you today. Where are you currently based, and are your local nightclubs open again?
Hi, I’m (Greg) based in Poland, and Voitek is based in Spain. Luckily the clubs are open in both countries. We really missed DJing, and it’s really cool to be connected with people again and do what we really love.
Could you start by giving a bit of background on how you guys met, and what inspired the name Catz ’N Dogz?
We both come from the same hometown – Szczecin in Poland. We both started DJing at the same time, so we were bound to start a party together. That was our start, and we ended up inviting other DJs from nearby Berlin. We started with the name 3 channels and after a few years we changed the name to CND. Our friends always said that we argued like an old couple, or a cat and a dog 😉
Sticking with the cats and dogs theme, do you have any pets, and if you could have any animal in the world for a pet… what would it be, and why?
Voitek had a dog, but he passed away. I had a cat, and now I’m a happy owner of 2 dogs, Mela – a french bulldog, super small, and huge grandpa Bruno, who is a Cane Corso and weighs like 70 kg 🙂 We love cats and dogs. If I had to choose, I would go for dogs. They can really cheer you up.
Getting more serious, you recently dropped a new EP on the Club Sweat label, and I wanted to learn more about those tracks and their inspiration.
We’ve been following the label for a long time, and ultimately did the EP special for them. It was a lot of fun for us to produce. Especially working with our friends Raymoane and Kiddy Smile. We love to work with vocals, and our goal was to make good club tracks.
How did you first make contact with the guys at Club Sweat, is there a story behind how you met?
As I said, we really liked the label and we were asked to do a remix. After that, we thought that it would be pretty cool to release a full EP. I don’t think it’ll be the last one we do together.
I’m told you guys are also passionate about working up a sweat in the gym, and I wanted to ask what songs are always on your workout playlist?
Definitely, Voitek is, as you can see. I’m on my way there hehe. It’s very important when you travel and spend so much time sitting to take care of yourself. I definitely play hip hop and some techno to get energized!
It must be hard keeping to a workout schedule when touring, do you have any food or health tips for keeping healthy?
We try to eat healthy when we aren’t travelling because when you travel it’s sometimes impossible. So to avoid blaming ourselves and feeling bad we just go with the flow during the weekends 😉
I’m told you actually quite like airports, which I was surprised to hear, so I wanted to ask which are your favourites?
Haha yes, they’re a big part of our lives ;D We travel so much that we know the shortcuts and secrets to many of them 😀 LIke where’s the best toilet, sandwich, or shortest line to the security. I was thinking about it and if I had to write a book, I could really write a cool guide with all the secret tips.
We often use Madrid airport, which is cool, and Berlin airport, which is not great, unfortunately. Our favourites… I would say are, Zurich, Copenhagen, Oslo.
Talking of airports and touring, what’s coming up next in your gig schedule?
We are playing our first gig in a long time with live musicians, singers and visuals in our hometown philharmonic. We’re really looking forward to that. Later this month we will go back to the UK for one of our favorite parties, Ware House Project, and we will also DJ with our good friend Eats Everything in Birmingham.
After that we will go to Poland, Cyprus, and for NYE we are splitting and Voitek is playing in the US and I have a gig in London.
Thanks for taking the time to talk with me today, is there a message for fans or anything else you want to add before we finish?
Thank you so much! And thank you everybody for listening to our music and supporting us now and during the lockdown. We are really looking forward to seeing you all on the dance floor!
