Heimlich Knüller and Madmotormiquel talk about Berlin nightlife’s past, future and present in the new short film ‘Beyond Sound’.
Flow Music is excited to present the trailer for the movie that’s been made by talented creative director, Leonie Gerner. She is a passionate Berliner who wanted to deep dive into the city’s music scene through the eyes of Heimlich Knüller and Madmotormiquel, who are two of Berlin’s most respected DJs and producers.
Although Flow Music has its geographical roots in Australia, the team has an interest in global music culture and Berlin is widely regarded as the world’s electronic music capital. So, we wanted to learn more about the city through the thoughts and experiences of its residents.
Heimlich Knüller and Madmotormiquel recount their earliest electronic music memories and some of the moments they feel shaped it into what it is today. Also, touching on the launch of large events and festivals in and around Berlin such as Fusion.
Talking about her short film, Leonie Gerner said: “The realisation of this film was done in cooperation with a strong team that took a lot of time to make this film what it is. First and foremost Anselm, who was responsible for the editing. With this short portrait, I wanted above all to show the people behind the profession of DJ – without inflating the stories or presenting them as something other than what they are. What does it mean to be a DJ and producer in Berlin – what kind of lifestyle do you enter into, how long can you practice this profession? When this short film was made, there was no talk of Corona – shortly afterwards, the entire art and cultural landscape went quiet. An interesting look at a time just before the standstill – of which we were not aware at the time. A look through the keyhole at the Berlin nightlife.”
