Nick Berry is a DJ from Sydney, Australia who’s been involved in his home city’s club scene since 2014. He has made a name for himself as a purveyor of the finest melodic house/techno, and he is also a founding member of the Anomaly Radio Show. A well-travelled clubber and DJ, his music taste is a culmination of clubbing scenes from around the world.

What is your approach when making a mix and what was the vibe/energy you were trying to capture in your set? You also decided to add an extra 2 hours to the standard format which was sublime. What inspired you to do this?

Hello, It’s great to be here! For this set, I wanted to give the listener an insight into my music taste and the sound that I enjoy playing. I hoped to give them the opportunity to hear me and everything I’m about musically. As well as provide them with a taste of what they can expect to hear from me on a night out on the town or at a peak time festival set.

I decided to add another 2 hours to the set and make it 5:33, as it hadn’t been done before, and I had so much music that I wanted to play, so figured I would keep the good times rolling 🙂

I’m told you run your own radio show ‘Anomaly’, and we would love to know more about that?

Anomaly is a passion project that was born in early 2020. From the beginning, we wanted Anomaly to provide an audiovisual experience to our audience. What I mean by this is we wanted to provide people with a unique and unheard-of sound; accompanied by contemporary and eclectic graphic design. 

For us, the art had to represent the quirkiness of Anomaly. It had to be completely different to anything that people were used to here in Sydney and Australia in general. We liaised with two artists from Berlin and Barcelona, before we linked up with our current artist; Panthera Krause, who is based in Leipzig, Germany. Not only is Panthera a prominent DJ, but he is also one of my favourite graphic designers. His designs are incredibly unique, and I still pinch myself whenever he sends over new art.

So far, Anomaly has released 15 radio shows from 15 fiercely talented international artists; Budakid, Invōker, David Mayer, Armonica, Murat Uncuoglu, Phunkadelica, Kris Davis, Aaaron, Stereo MC’s, Super Flu and others.

At what age did you first find your love for music, and when did you start DJing?

I found music at a very young age through singing of all things. I was highly passionate about it and used to sing a lot of Elvis Presley songs. I find that so funny now, as whilst I appreciate the impact that Elvis had on many people, I’m definitely more of a Beatles man myself, and haven’t really listened to his music since that period in my life. I first came into contact with Electronic Music in my early teens thanks to the Ministry of Sound compilation CDs. I listened to Above & Beyond’s music and immediately fell in love with it. A few years later, I found festivals and clubbing, then the rest is history. I started DJ’ing back in 2014, and since then, I’ve made a name for myself in Sydney and beyond through my love for melodic music. I’ve had some pretty amazing opportunities over the last few years, sharing lineups with DJ Koze, Jimi Jules, Trikk, The Drifter, Oliver Koletzki, Andhim and Gerd Janson to name a few. 

Who is your personal favourite DJ, and how have they influenced your own style?

For me, it’s hard to pick one single DJ. I have a few gun to head favourites, namely – Dixon, Âme, Solomun, &ME, Adam Port and Rampa. I am a die-hard fan of these guys, and at some point, all have influenced my DJIng in a profound way. I feel that Solomun from 2014 – 2019 was an unstoppable musical force. His DJ sets were so prolific, unique and structured. I have seen him countless times all over the world and pretty much every set left me gobsmacked. 

Dixon & Âme are currently at the top of their game, and I absolutely love the sound that they have nurtured through their record labels Innervisions and Exit Strategy. I love that they are never afraid to throw a few curveballs throughout their sets that change the energy of the dance floor, and they are really unique in that way. 

Finally, I must profess my love for the Keinemusik crew. When it comes to production, those guys really are the best in the business. I think their talent both as DJs and producers is severely underrated, but at the same time that is one of the best things about them, as they are the dance music industry’s best-kept secret. 

Tell us a few of your favourite clubs. What is it about them that stands out?

My 3 favourite venues are as follows… 

Else, Berlin: Is my favourite venue on the planet. It’s an open air day club situated on the Spree river in Treptower. A lot of the club has been built out of shipping containers that have been painted bright colours. There are two beautiful trees in the middle of the dance floor and the acoustics are unbeatable. Definitely get yourself there if you are in Berlin over the summer, and I promise you will not regret it!

Sisyphos, Berlin: As far as nightclubs are concerned, Sisyphos has got it all. The venue features a massive outside garden and dance floor, a treehouse, a coffee shop, and 4 other dance floors featuring sounds across the whole musical spectrum. Definitely one of my favs. 

Pacha, Ibiza: This choice may come as a surprise to some, however, Pacha Ibiza has an energy to it that most venues would only dream of having. When the right DJ is playing, the lights, sound system and the DJ booth all collide to create an unrivalled atmosphere. Watching Dixon and Solomun b2b there for hours on end in 2018 remains my favourite dancefloor moment. 

The places we grow up in can have a powerful effect on our creative energy. Tell us a bit about Sydney and how you feel it has influenced your sound and direction?

I absolutely love living in Sydney, as it really is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Unfortunately, the government does not recognise the music and arts scene as having value; causing a once vibrant dance and clubbing scene to become a shell of its former self. Amongst this challenging environment is a select few determined promoters that work their asses off to create amazing parties in Sydney. I have a lot of respect for them, as without them there would be no way for young people to express themselves musically. 

Due to this environment, I’ve had to look elsewhere to satisfy my love of music and dancing. When it comes to electronic music, Berlin and Ibiza have been the most influential to my sound and path. I don’t think I would have my music interests without those two places.

Outside of DJing and music how do you spend your time?

Other than music, my major passions in life consist of travel, photography/design and world affairs. A lot of my life is devoted to those things! 

What’s next on your schedule, any upcoming gigs?

I am playing Return To Rio festival later this year, which I always look forward to!
