John Johnson’s ICONYC returns this week presenting one of their best offerings this year from Filter Bear.
The Aussie artist has already found a home on both Cid Inc’s Replug Records and long standing German imprint Traum. This year promises to be his best on record with a very large collaboration with fellow countryman Luka Sambe due later this year. Now making his much anticipated ICONYC debut Filter Bear presents his two track EP ‘Sonata In A Daze’.
Since I first heard Filter Bear’s contribution to the ‘Tour De Traum X’ compilation a few years ago I’ve followed his productions. Not prolific by any means, he’s certainly picked his spots over the last two years and each production has been memorable as a result. Every creation holds its own unique space and both cuts here certainly do as well. The lead piece ‘Sonata In A Daze’ is not only brilliantly coined but expertly crafted. From organic percussion and subversive grooves to mallet-like motifs and acidic rhythms there’s certainly a lot to like, but what’s most appealing is how unique it all sounds together. It’s deep, trippy, melodic and quite meditative all at once which makes for an incredible listen several times over. This is a rare thing and above all that it’s got a strong enough cadence to make it work on a dance floor as well. Incredible music from Filter Bear.
The companion piece ‘Together In May’ comes in deeper and more emotive. Beginning with a gorgeously musical intro the kick eventually drops at the 90 second mark, along with warm bass swells which flow through a moving series of chord changes. Featuring the vocals of Shane Hagan there’s a lovely human side to this one and what unique elements they are. Somewhat below the surface and indistinct in nature yet pulling just the right emotion out of the track. Delicate and sparely used pianos give it a poignant and somewhat cinematic feel which makes for a very unique contrast to the indie-esque vocals. There are a multitude of artists out there who all sound exactly alike but Filter Bear is certainly not one of them. Two more charming creations here making for a beautiful EP and great release for ICONYC. Highly Recommended.
