Air Horse One drop moody downtempo release “Upside Down”

The release is out now Baikal Nomads and includes remixes by Zuma Dionys, Catatonique, Oondza, Matija & Richard Elcox.

Air Horse One release their new downtempo EP, Upside Down, which combines trippy atmosphere with moody intensity.

There are two impressive original tracks, as well as solo remixes by Zuma Dionys, Catatonique, and Oondza. Matija and Richard Elcox also team up for a collaborative remix.

It’s an interesting release that showcases Air Horse One’s distinctive sound, which has smouldering grooves unfolding with building tension and intense atmosphere. This release comes from the Baikal Nomads record label, adding to Air Horse One’s catalogue, which also includes record labels ranging from Get Physical to KataHaifisch.

Most of the remix artists have stayed true to the style of the original tracks, but Zuma Dionys’ version stands out due to its more organic sound, and the others are primarily synth focused.

The title track “Upside Down” has warped vocal chants and a twisted bassline at the heart of its groove. Stripped back drums leave space for the dark atmospherics that drive the tracks, and ominous bass swells ramp up the tension.

“Flip” is the second of the two originals, and it’s got a lot of the same elements that are on display in the title track. The main difference being a call and response between two vocal samples, and what sounds like a sitar sample adding short flurries of melody.

As aforementioned, most of the remixes sound quite similar to the original versions. Catatonique adds an extra melody synth to “Flip,” and Oondza’s remix of “Upside Down” also adds an extra synth sound.

Matija and Richard Elcox’s remix of “Flip” adds a new bassline and different percussion to the dark pads and vocals of the original, giving it more of a juddering flow.

Zuma Dionys’s version of “Upside Down” is the most distinctive of the remixes, as he swaps out the bassline and drums for organic sounds that contrast with the synthesised aesthetics of the original.
