EDC Europe has cancelled its 2021 edition that was going to be held in southern Portugal.

The event was last in Europe five years ago when it hosted a European edition in the UK. Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) festival was planning to hold its 2021 European event between June 18th and June 21st at a place called Praia da Rocha in the town of Portimao in the south of Portugal.

It had already confirmed a hundred names for this edition including the likes of Adam Beyer, Kölsch, Loco Dice and Eric Prydz among many others. Although organisers had optimistically been holding out for a change in the health situation, the event has now been officially cancelled due to the pandemic.

The announcement of the cancellation came yesterday via the event’s social media alongside news that it will instead run in 2022.

Opening the message with “Dear headliners” it then continues: “Thank you for your patience and understanding over these past few months. We’ve worked extremely hard to deliver EDC in Portugal for you, but given the continuing travel restrictions on certain countries and other pandemic-related complications, we unfortunately are not able to guarantee the proper EDC experience for all of our fans globally at this time. As a result, EDC Portugal will be moving to June 17+18+19 of 2022. We know brighter days on the beach await us in the future, and we look forward to seeing you there.

“All current ticket holders will receive an email by this Friday, May 14 and will have the opportunity to roll their tickets over to the 2022 edition of the festival or request a refund.

“We are currently confirming our new lineup for 2022, which promises to be as good, if not better, than this year’s. More updates to follow, and we will see you Under the Electric Sky in 2022.”

According to GitHub in February of 2021, Portugal had its second wave of the COVID-19 virus and was reporting over 300 deaths a day, but that has since dropped dramatically with only one death linked to coronavirus reported on the 11^th of May.

Portugal however, is still reporting an average of 328 cases a day, and is still early in its vaccination roll-out, so the pandemic situation is still in a fragile state with the potential risk of another wave.
