Haider Uppal Unveils a Masterful Mix of House and Breaks for Flow Sessions 110!

In a compelling blend of live energy and meticulous studio craft, Haider Uppal delivers a groundbreaking Flow Sessions mix that exemplifies his multifaceted approach to electronic music. This extensive mix, which starts with a vibrant live recording from Lahore, spans over three hours, featuring a rich tapestry of house music shades, captivating breaks, and personal productions. Uppal not only showcases his dynamic range but also pays homage to his musical journey and the influences that have shaped his unique sound. Through this interview, we explore the inspirations that fuel his creativity and the artistic journey that continues to shape his sound.

1. What motivated or inspired you to become a musician? How did you learn to play/produce?

Hi there! Thanks for inviting me to do the flow mix and this interview!!

I’ve been around music since I was a kid, mainly through my family, even if it was just a hobby. I naturally was inclined and curious, and so wanted to dive deeper but I was limited in my options and available resources, coming from Pakistan. Still, I found ways to express myself through sound using technology. I really believe creating art from sound is what I’m meant to do.

While the pandemic brought the world to a halt, it gave me the opportunity to focus on music production and audio engineering with a newfound energy. Even though I had been experimenting with production even at the age of 13. 

Everything I know in this field is self-taught; from online resources, course books, to having access to a recording studio which became my second home. The feeling of learning something new, making mistakes, and improving has been the push behind my achievements in this field. I credit my success to applied based learning, my mentors and my family who have supported me to move forward with confidence.

2.⁠ ⁠What inspired the creation of your debut album ‘Graduated’? Can you share some of the themes or stories behind the tracks?

My debut album “Graduated” was truly a collaborative effort, spurred on by my younger brother’s encouragement. Together, we carefully curated the tracklist, selecting songs that represent a specific period in my musical journey. The album’s striking visual identity was crafted by the talented AI artist Musfira, known for her work with Boiler Room Pakistan.

The music itself is a collection of deep, dreamy house tracks produced between 2015 and 2020, during a time when my focus was divided between music and academics. Releasing “Graduated” felt like a necessary step in my evolution as an artist, allowing me to embrace new sonic directions. It is a sort of breaking free from various things that held me back to follow my passion. It’s been gratifying to see these tracks resonate with listeners, reminding me of the timeless power of music to evoke emotion and connect us to specific moments in time.

While my current sound has evolved towards a more groove-oriented style, the warm reception of “Graduated” reaffirms the value of revisiting and sharing earlier works. It’s a testament to the ongoing process of growth and exploration that defines a creative career.

3.⁠ ⁠How did your experiences in Detroit shape your approach to house and techno music?

My time in Michigan, spent studying and immersing myself in the heart of Detroit’s legendary techno and house scene, was nothing short of transformative. Witnessing firsthand the raw energy and intricate musicianship of influential figures like Delano Smith, Jimpster, Matthew Dear, and Galcher Lustwerk ignited a lifelong passion for these genres. 

Detroit’s vibrant spirit and rich musical history fostered an environment of experimentation and exploration, pushing me to refine my own sound and develop a unique artistic voice.

The opportunity to open for Jody Wisternoff’s debut Detroit performance was a pivotal moment, validating my musical direction and empowering me to seamlessly incorporate my own productions into my sets.

The invaluable lessons learned and connections forged in Detroit’s underground clubs continue to shape my artistic approach, instilling in me a deep reverence for the roots of electronic music while inspiring me to push boundaries and chart my own course within this dynamic and ever-evolving landscape.

4. How have you used music to address social issues, or make a positive impact on your community? Why is this important to you?

It is universally said that art can transcend borders and foster unity. This is a strong belief of mine as well, which has further solidified as my track “Lahore” has been played numerous times in India – blurring the political history and tension that exists between the two neighbouring countries. Moments like these help me realise that I can bring positivity with music and connect with people regardless of their race, religion or nationality.

Earlier in 2023, I was invited as a guest lecturer on music production to a liberal arts university in Pakistan; the opportunity to share my knowledge with young people who are passionate about music was nothing less than thrilling; more of these lectures are scheduled in the future.

I am committed to bringing my knowledge about music production into the almost non-existent music education in Pakistan, filling that gap with mentorship / workshops in future. My first-hand experience of the transformative power of music over the past decade has taught me that it can educate, inspire, and empower people to express themselves authentically.

5.⁠ ⁠You’ve collaborated with Blondish’s Abracadabra TV in the past, how have these collaborations influenced your DJing?

Back in 2021, I had the chance to cover for Saqib’s show, which rekindled my love for DJing. It was also a great way to celebrate my 23rd birthday during the pandemic. (Thank you Blondish!!)

Then, in 2022, I played my first back-to-back set with Lyla at District 19, Karachi. Her eclectic taste and fearless approach to mixing genres inspired me to take more risks and push the boundaries of my own musical expression. This collaboration opened my ears to new possibilities and has had a lasting impact on my style.

These experiences culminated in the creation of two upcoming streams, recorded in the breathtaking Hunza Valley against the backdrop of the Karakoram mountains. These streams / selections are a testament to my journey and growth as a DJ, showcasing the power of music to connect and inspire.

Working with Abracadabra has been empowering on multiple levels. Their focus on community and immersive experiences has inspired me to incorporate storytelling and visuals into my sets, creating a more engaging and multi-sensory journey for the audience.

6.⁠ ⁠Can you tell us more about your role in managing YokoO’s Satya label and how it impacts your creative process?

Working with YokoO on his Satya label for the past few years has been a truly enriching experience. I’ve been engaged in all aspects of the label’s operations, from managing day-to-day activities to curating its unique visual identity. My involvement in design, strategy, and A&R, and everything in between, has provided invaluable experience and knowledge about the music industry, and this knowledge has undoubtedly influenced my approach to making music.

YokoO’s mentorship has been nothing short of transformative in my professional journey. His guidance extends beyond the typical collaborator-artist dynamic, evolving into a trusted mentorship that has nurtured my creative growth. He consistently challenges me to step outside of my comfort zone and explore uncharted territories in music production and life. His inspiring dedication for his craft, coupled with his humility and deep understanding of music’s ability to forge deep connections, serves as an endless well of inspiration for me as an artist and I feel truly grateful.

7.⁠ ⁠What was your approach to remixing Nabihah Iqbal’s track on Ninja Tune, and how did you put your own spin on it? How has this signing impacted your career?

Remixing Nabihah Iqbal’s track for Ninja Tune was a unique challenge that I approached with an open mindset, recognizing the importance of respecting the original while infusing it with my own creative vision. This particular track presented a unique challenge due to its intricate layers and complexity. I delved deep into the provided stems, meticulously deconstructing and rebuilding the track, experimenting with different textures and arrangements. By the end, the project had blossomed into a hundred individual channels, each contributing to a richly textured and immersive soundscape.

The final remix is a testament to the power of experimentation and collaboration. It honors Nabihah’s original vision while offering a fresh perspective, incorporating new sonic elements and unexpected twists. 

It is an incredible opportunity to be the focus remixer on this release, sharing the spotlight with the legendary Frank Wiedemann, a true pioneer in electronic music. This experience has not only validated my creative approach but also fueled my passion for pushing boundaries and exploring new musical territories. And of course motivated me to pursue a music career in life instead of the conventional ones that I was told to follow.

Being signed to Ninja Tune is a dream come true, and I’m eager to continue building upon this momentum in my future endeavors.

8. What can fans expect from your future projects, and are there any upcoming collaborations or releases you’re particularly excited about?

I’m incredibly excited for my debut EP, coming soon on Berlin-based label Nie Wieder Schlafen. It’s been a long time in the making, and I can’t wait to share it with everyone. I’m particularly thrilled about the remixes from Pablo Bolivar, Soela, Thomas Steiler, and Quatri – they’ve each brought their own unique touch to the tracks, and I think music aficionados will be blown away.
