Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat celebrates its 100th release in serious style, with an original from Guy J and remixes from Cattaneo & Graziano Raffa and Henry Saiz.
‘Algorithm’ hits its stride almost immediately, locking into a groove with crisp percussion and a swaying bassline, while urgently fluttering synths and abstract, spacey melodies emerge and set the scene for a second, pulsing bass part. The atmospheric breakdown introduces a new simple but hypnotic synth, which together with some subtle melodic flourishes gives the track its mesmerising final act. It’s fitting that Hernan Cattaneo joins forces with Sudbeat’s long-standing label manager Graziano Raffa for the first remix of ‘Algorithm’, and they take the track in slightly different direction, while keeping Guy J’s original’s crossover appeal. Dramatic chords and gentle stabs meet two basslines, one a subterranean rumble and the other a more driving and hypnotic sound, and the track takes us through a series of peaks and troughs. To my knowledge, this is the first time Henry Saiz has remixed a Guy J track since ‘Lamur’, which remains my favourite record of the past 10 years (though Guy J has remixed Saiz and of course the pair teamed up for the awesome ‘Meridian’ back in 2011). So expectations have been running high. Fortunately, you’re very unlikely to be disappointed – Henry Saiz turns in a hugely uplifting version of the track, boasting bold and catchy melodic themes and fantastically groovy bass parts. This is likely to get lodged in your head for a while.
Congratulations to all at Sudbeat for reaching this milestone, and to all involved in this package for creating something suitably excellent to mark the occasion!
