‘Burning Man: The Musical’ is a new comedy inspired by the world-famous festival.
This theatrical production was inspired by the ’90s heyday of the American festival in the Nevada desert before its billionaire takeover.
Due to the pandemic, Burning Man’s in-person festival has been cancelled for the past two years, but with those exceptions, its ran annually since being founded in 1986. Thousands of people usually attend its location at Black Rock City to exchange skills and services instead of using money for payments.
The festival is considered a celebration of culture and freedom of spirit with live music and various other performances being a part of the experience.
Molly is the fictional character who takes a lead role in the new musical. In the story, she starts a job at a new company that visits Black Rock City and attends a site described as a ‘temporary metropolis’, but chaos ensues due to a series of comical events at the new firm she’s joined.
Matt Werner is the person who led the project, with Gene Beck composing music, and Ari Grooves doing the dance choreography.
It was filmed over the pandemic at a point where theatres had been closed, and it was not possible to put on live events. The recording of the performance will be available to rent or buy on August 27th from Broadway on Demand.
Burning Man’s festival is expected to return in 2022 and run from August 22nd to September 7th. Its last edition in 2019 saw over 80,000 people attend, so it’s expected their return could be the biggest one yet, and the hype is already building.
