Bandcamp Fridays are returning from next month on February 4th.
The online music retailer started its fee-free initiative March 2020 as a way to help financially support artists and musicians whose careers had been financially impacted by the pandemic.
It’s been a super popular initiative that the websites artists and record labels have all gratefully taken advantage of, and it’s something that seems to have also attracted new users towards their website.
Bandcamp is a music retailer that lets people sell directly to fans without a distributor or any other third parties. The website does charge some fees, but those are often small in comparison to other sites such as Beatport or Apple Music.
As part of ‘Bandcamp Fridays’ the website waves 100% of its fees for a day, so those selling music on the platform make even more than usual, and this incentivises those buying the music to purchase on that day, as it gives even more support to their favourite artists.
The website’s official statement reads: “On the first Friday of the month since March of 2020, we’ve waived our revenue share to help support the many artists who have seen their livelihoods disrupted by the pandemic” it then continues “Over the course of 17 days, fans paid artists and labels more than $70 million dollars, helping cover rents, mortgages, groceries, medications, and much more.”
“If you’re among the nearly 800,000 fans who participated, thank you. It will likely be several months before live performance revenue returns in full. So we’re going to continue doing Bandcamp Fridays in 2022, on 4 February, 4 March, 1 April, and 6 May.”
