Christian Smith and Drunken Kong are both titans of the global techno scene, and they have collaborated on a new release called, “Succession.”
Individually they are both known for having an up-tempo style with lots of energy, and their combined efforts are everything that anyone familiar with them would expect.
Drunken Kong are a Japanese duo who are well known for being residents at Tokyo’s iconic nightclub, Womb. When it comes to productions, Drunken Kong are internationally respected, and boast releases on labels such as Monika Kruse’s Terminal M and Adam Beyer’s Drumcode. One of the other labels to feature music by Drunken Kong is Tronic, which is a record label run by Christian Smith.
Christian Smith is a well-respected veteran of the global techno scene, hailing from Sweden he has a discography stretching back to the ‘90s, and Tronic is equally respected, as an imprint that has released music by both genre leaders and fresh talent.
This particular release comes via Spanish record label, CODE Records, which is run by Cesar Almena and Nuke, who have each also contributed a remix to Succession. CODE Records is an imprint associated with the CODE events at Fabrik nightclub in Madrid where Cesar Almena and Nuke are both resident DJs. They are also established producers with releases on labels such as Naked Lunch, Odd Recordings and MB Elektronics.
The original mix of Succession opens this release with its punchy kick drum and electrifying lead synth, which is augmented with punishing claps and a namesake vocal sample. Cesar Almena’s mix of Succession is a raw and stripped-back version with added atmospherics and breakbeat drum patterns. Nuke’s remix of Succession is a hypnotising remake with a new melody line, which intertwines with his fast-paced percussion to create a mesmerising groove.
