Police in America broke up a 142-person illegal party that was being held at a New York location contaminated by radioactive waste!
During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown there have been many stories of illegal raves and other social gatherings, but perhaps the most recent example of this happened in America over the last weekend.
New York police were called to a location known for being contaminated with radioactive waste because there were reports of an illegal party.
Upon arrival, the police were confronted by the sight of over 140 people dancing to loud music at the location.
It’s reported that none of them were wearing a face mask and many appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.
Usually in this instance, the focus would be on the recklessness of having a gathering during the pandemic of a potentially fatal disease. Then, giving additional scorn for people not even taking the precaution of wearing a mask.
This instance takes things to a whole new level, as firstly ignoring anything to do with a pandemic… how desperate must someone be for a rave, that they decide to go to an area known for being radioactive!
The irresponsible party was held at the former site of the Wolff-Alport Chemical Company, which ran its plant there between 1920 and 1954. Rare earth elements were mined there using a technique that as a by-product created sludge containing the radioactive element Thorium.
At that time, employees were unaware the disposal of the radioactive sludge in the nearby sewer could cause harmful effects. In 1947, the Atomic Energy Commission intervened and stopped the site from doing this.
