Flow Music is thrilled to welcome Maastricht’s West & Hill for a very special edition of Flow Sessions. Known for his seamless fusion of hypnotic, organic, and percussive sounds, West & Hill has carved a distinctive niche in the electronic music world. With releases on celebrated labels like Get Physical, Kindisch, and Madorasindahouse, his music effortlessly bridges introspection and dancefloor energy. In this exclusive interview, West & Hill reflects on his journey, creative process, and what makes his Flow Sessions mix so unique.
Growing up in the Netherlands, how did your surroundings influence your journey into electronic music and the creation of your unique sound?
From a young age, I was drawn to the underground club scene, attending events across the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. Iconic venues like Trouw in Amsterdam, Fuse in Brussels, and Catwalk (now Toffler) in Rotterdam were more than just places to go out—they were spaces of inspiration. The energy and creativity of the artists performing there shaped my sound and inspired me to explore my own artistic voice.
With support from heavyweights like Black Coffee, Adam Port, and Oliver Koletzki, how has their endorsement shaped your career and music production?
Having such influential artists support my music is incredibly motivating. Their endorsement gives me confidence and inspires me to keep pushing creative boundaries. It’s humbling to know my tracks resonate with some of the most respected names in the industry, and it drives me to continue exploring and refining my sound.
You’ve released on iconic labels like Get Physical, Kindisch, and Madorasindahouse. What’s your creative process when producing for such influential platforms?
Each label has its own unique identity, so I tailor my approach while staying true to my style. For Get Physical, I focus on groove and dancefloor energy, while Kindisch leans towards organic and emotional depth. No matter the platform, I add my personal touch through melodic choices, rhythms, and sound design, ensuring my music remains distinct.
Having shared the stage with artists like Âme, Maceo Plex, and Joris Voorn, what’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned?
The most important takeaway is to stay true to yourself. It’s easy to feel the pressure to adapt your set to align with headliners, but I’ve learned that authenticity resonates most with the crowd. Playing the tracks that reflect my sound creates a stronger, more meaningful connection with the audience
In your words, this Flow Sessions mix is a more introspective and emotionally resonant journey. What inspired this reflective direction?
The extended format of Flow Sessions allows me to tell a story without rushing. For this mix, I wanted to explore deeper emotional textures and slower tempos, creating an immersive experience that unfolds gradually. This approach lets me connect with listeners on a more profound level.
You’ve included tracks from artists like Daniel Bortz, Mano Le Tough, and Dixon. How do their styles align with your vision?
Their timeless tracks, especially from the early 2010s, resonate deeply with me. These artists capture a unique emotional depth and hypnotic quality that align perfectly with the story I wanted to tell in this mix. Their influence continues to shape my artistic vision.
Your mixes are known for telling stories. How do you curate tracks to ensure each set unfolds like a narrative?
I’m meticulous about track selection—everything must fit the vibe, tempo, and emotion of the story I’m telling. I don’t set boundaries with genres, focusing instead on the journey I want to create. Each track adds a unique piece to the narrative.
You’ve spoken about capturing moments and memories in this mix. Can you share a specific one that influenced the flow?
I wanted the mix to start slow and build gradually, blending older and newer tracks with shared emotional depth and hypnotic rhythms. These elements are the foundation of my sound, helping me create a cohesive and impactful story.
What’s next for West & Hill? Any new releases we should look out for?
I have a lot in the pipeline! Next month, I’m releasing a new EP with El Mundo on Kindisch, along with a remix we worked on together. There are also exciting collaborations with other producers and a few edits and remixes I’m eager to finish. Stay tuned—there’s plenty to come!
Is there anything else you’d like to share with your fans?
It’s been a joy crafting this Flow Session for you. These 3 hours and 33 minutes are my story—a journey through the sounds and influences that have shaped me. I hope it resonates with you and that you find something meaningful in it. Thank you for listening and for being part of this experience!
