AIRBORNE BLACK IS RUN BY 50:HERTZ, WITH A&R’D HEADED UP BY ORANGE RECORDINGS LABEL BOSS, AND 50:HERTZ MEMBER STEVE MULDER. The label celebrates the craziest moments of clubbing, inviting artists to share their own personal memories
Hi Martin, can you start by telling us about yourself, and how you first got into electronic music?
Back when I was 10 years old we used to have these discos in my summer camp and I was one of the guys who always played music on these discos. So every year I had to have the best music possible so I started to discover different kinds of music on my own free time and quickly completely fell in love with electronic dance music. It always had the best impact on the dance floor and from those moments forward I always knew I wanted to be Dj. (I just love bass-heavy music)
Could you talk us through your new EP on Airborne Black?
This Ep is the first real representation of where I am going with my sound. I have combined to 2 different genres (Techno / Trance) into one genre in a sense. I love how energetic and groovy Techno is but I also love the trippy and euphoric melodic parts of Trance. That’s why my name is Martin K4rma, Karma is something I really believe in. It always has the good and the bad. For my music its means euphoric melodics and aggressive and energetic drops. Listen and let the music speak for itself. I was also very honoured to hear Filth On Acid, ELEVATE, Armada artist Mitch de Klein would remix my track! His amazing remix really completed the whole EP.
Martin K4rma’s Blackest Moment: “THAT HOTEL WAS OWNED BY SOME BIG DRUGDEALER”
Our own party got cancelled in Beirut due to the revolution that was going at October. So this woman came to our place asked us to come and play at that hotel/after party. Basically it was an 24/7 party hotel where you could buy a room and party basically nonstop. We went there, played some Techno with my 2 colleagues realised that hotel probably was owned by some big drug dealer and everyone were completely fucked (probably taking every drug there was to be taken). Was a fun experience but I probably wouldn’t do it again”
How did you meet the team behind Airborne Black, and is this your first release for the imprint?
This is my debut on the label. I contacted Steve when I was sending demos out to different labels. He got back to me about the new label he was running and I liked the idea behind Airborne Black label so here we are!
Which other labels have you worked with, and what’s been your proudest moment to date?
A Canadian label called Red Channel Records and Airborne Black are the labels I have released on. My proudest moment was back in October when I got a chance to share the stage with my idol Enrico Sangiuliano in Spain. I actually tested this release for the first time on that stage and it worked like magic and crowds energy was INSANE. I will never forget that night!
Have there been any big-name DJ’s supporting your music, and who is the DJ/producer that inspires you the most?
Yes! Actually this current release was supported by Joris Voorn, Teenage Mutants, Ilario Alicante, Thomas Schumacher, Joseph Capriati to name a few. So I must be doing something right! And on the top of my head, past releases have been supported by the likes of Maceo Plex, Richie Hawtin, Luigi Madonna and Paco Osuna.
My biggest inspiration is Enrico Sangiuliano. Not only for his music, but he took Techno to another level in my opinion. He didn’t lock himself on certain boundaries but just expressed himself fully, combining different genres.
What’s next in your schedule after the Airborne Black release that’s in stores now?
I just finished almost an album worth of tracks, but I still haven’t decided what I will do with them. Lets see what the future holds!
Is there anything else you would like to tell our readers about?
I have found my purpose in life, and it’s so fulfilling to be creating every day and bringing joy and meaningfulness to other people’s lives. I just want to everyone who’s reading this, don’t listen to your own excuses about why you cant do something. You are never too old, too poor, too untalented.. you name it. When there is a wish there is a will. Listen to yourself and be free. Lots of good karma to you all <3
