Nora En Pure recently dropped her latest single “Sign of the Times” on Enormous Tunes, and we wanted to learn more about the release plus some of her passions outside of music…
Hi Nora, it’s great to be speaking with you today. What part of the world are you currently in, and what’s the current pandemic situation in relation to live music and nightclubs?
Hi thanks for having me. I’m currently in Mexico as I played some events here last weekend and I’m enjoying some wonderful days here in Riviera Maya before heading to The States. The pandemic situation in relation to live music is quite tricky at the moment, as regulations change very quickly, especially for travelling. We need to do a lot of testing frequently and you never know if governments may suddenly implement quarantining again. It is definitely a challenging time for touring.
I wanted to start by asking about your partnership with Beneath The Waves, could you tell us about the organisation, and how you help them?
Beneath The Waves is a non-profit organisation that is dedicated to promoting ocean health, with a focus on threatened species conservation and marine protected areas. I got involved as nature is a vital part of my life and feel whenever we can give something back to nature we absolutely should. They liked the idea of connecting their work with my music, which is very nature-inspired, and this way make people aware of their valuable work on other channels.
During the summer, I went with them on one of their expeditions to learn more about their work. We went to The Bahamas for some shark tagging where they collect data about the sharks’ habitats and find out the areas where they spend the most time. Among other things, this data will help work out new protected areas with local governments.
I think it’s great that you are working with Beneath The Waves, what’s your personal relationship with the ocean, were you brought up in a coastal area or was it something else that sparked your passion?
I’m somewhat obsessed with the ocean. Nature can be so calming, pretty, but so wild, raw and aggressive as well. I will forever be fascinated by those forces. The ocean, in particular, as I just find so incredible to even just look at and be in its presence. It makes you feel small and puts you in your place somehow. It is so powerful, deep and undiscovered. While I often get quite emotional, I also feel so alive around coastlines. It always makes me reflect on the here and now plus life in general.
We did often go to the ocean when I was a kid, not to the pretty calm beaches, but to the rougher ones where you’d have massive waves crashing on the rocks. We would either sit and watch them in awe or get in and try to escape the waves!
Do you have a favourite beach or ocean location that you like to visit or have a fond memory of, and what made that place so special?
Since I have lived in Switzerland for so long, where we don’t have ocean access, I’m insanely happy, and often a bit overwhelmed anywhere I get a glimpse of an ocean. But I do love the wilder ones with dramatic coastlines, and the spot I mentioned earlier that we always visited as kids in South Africa, that definitely holds a very special place in my heart.
How often do you get out into nature, as it must be hard finding downtime between gigs?
Whenever I can really. If I’m staying in a nice place, it is really hard for me to keep up with deadlines and focus on work, as the escape into nature is really what keeps me sane, and gives me so much joy and peace. This is only intensified with touring, as that exposes you to a lot of stress and a lot of time in cities, planes, hotel rooms – very busy environments in general.
Talking of your gigs, what’s coming up in your schedule, as I’m told you have some exciting things happening?
This weekend I’m in The States to finally play Denver & Austin, two of my favourite cities that I have been waiting for a really long time to play again! Then I’m heading to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, London and theoretically Berlin, but Germany already changed restrictions again, so that one is postponed for now. Then I have a Christmas break at home and will continue at the end of the year for Decadence in Arizona and New York to bring in the New Year. Can’t wait, as it’s quite epic to be in NYC for NYE.
You are also a talented producer, and I wanted to ask about your next single ‘Sign Of The Times’… could you talk me through the track, and what inspired it?
Sign Of The Times is a very special record for me as it is super classically inspired. It is quite far from general club or dance music and is very organic, as I just love that combination. I know this style may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I just think it is so different to the majority of what you hear out there. It excites me to do different things and just go my own lane. I feel this record pushes again in such a different direction, and it’s something you will probably hear live only at a Nora En Pure show.
2021 has been a crazy year, what have been your personal highlights?
It was definitely special and emotional to return to playing shows and facing crowds again, seeing a lot of friends again after the lockdown chaos, playing a lot of music you couldn’t play out for quite a while and being so much more grateful about it all. In general, it was a year of ups and downs, very mixed feelings, some moments of luck and joy, then some of pure frustration. We probably all grew much more in this (and last) year than in any other.
What are you most looking forward to in 2022?
I just wish for some stability and calmness to return to the world. Hopefully, that can happen in 2022.
Thanks for taking the time to talk with me today, is there a message for fans or anything else you would like to add before we finish?
Thanks for reading and hope to see you sometime on the road!
