Scotty.A – Touching the Void (Proton)

Proton’s latest release sees Norwich-based producer Scotty.A return to the label for two fantastic deep new cuts.

‘Touching the Void’ sees Scotty.A serving up dubby, techy house, with a low-slung groove and sparse stabs driving things along nicely, and a beautiful, aquatic breakdown leading to a more engaging and melodic second half, boasting dreamy pads and metallic hooks.

The real treat here, though, is ‘Out in the Boonies’, which has Scotty.A’s fingerprints all over it, from the airy, atmospheric pads to the subtle, hypnotic offbeat bassline. A little before the halfway mark, Scotty.A introduces a simple melody, which carries the track into a truly gorgeous breakdown, leading to a hazy, spellbinding finale – this is pretty much my idea of a perfect record.

The last few years have seen Scotty.A’s sound evolve, with his productions increasingly leaving behind the progressive house sound that he was originally known for, and heading out into the deeper house and techno waters that he has long been exploring as a DJ. This EP is one of his strongest outings of late, with ‘Out in the Boonies’ being the clear favourite here for me.
