Review: Dublin Based Nitetales Delivers The Goods For Modern Agenda

PFG’s Neale Moore Reveals Why

Originating from Dublin, Nitetales is the production moniker for Mel Donnellan who in a relatively short time has clocked up serious miles in the scene.

Ibiza Club News DJ, bookings across the White Isle and Europe, running and playing out at all of Ireland’s capital club nights as well as festivals across his homeland. These steps have seen releases already on Deeplomatic and Heavy Records, now this new EP looks to take him to another level on Modern Agenda.

Both tracks… ‘Awakening’ and ‘Drive’ open in a grand manner, big room synths and crash cymbals reflect the urgency in which you’re tempted to dance. Mel’s experience of working in small and large club spaces see both tracks offer up hypnotic beatless breakdowns; Awakenings is a juicy 909 led effort, Drive proffers a more Balearic style riff with lovely harmonies. Both tracks bounce the listeners audio perspectives around the room nicely, Sharp shiny hi-hats kick the beats nicely back in too.

Local DJ/Producer Gavin Rochfords slant on Awakenings sees him bring more pace and percussion to the table. Gav has had previous work released on ICONYC and Modern Agenda so knows his way round a solid prog track. There’s plenty of uplifting melody here too, a timely reminder of the skills which saw him signed up to Saiz’s impressive Natura Soronis imprint recently.

Grazze’s take on Drive sees him replace the heavy percussion with lighter tech house type beats. The minute long drop that’s full of filtered arpeggios and soothing drum rolls make it faster too which opens the door to wider audiences; I can see this going down well at festivals and larger club nights.

Overall then a top EP which will see Nitetales expand his horizons out of the city of Dublin and beyond to a more discerning audience.
