Bastards and Funk and Sonic Union – Mists of Dawn (Afterglow Deep)

Lowbit’s Bastards of Funk and Sonic Union return to Afterglow Deep two years after their glorious ‘Solar Flare’ with a deeply melodic piece of progressive fare, ‘Mists of Dawn’. Rising British talent Dale Middleton turns in yet another killer remix on the (metaphorical) flipside.

Bastards of Funk and Sonic Union’s original features subtle but moving glassy melodies layered onto driving stabs, massive ascending bass tones, and rippling synths which are allowed to really come to the fore during the main breakdown.

Following on from a recent string of fantastic remixes on the likes of Lowbit, Axon, Mirabilis and Juicebox, Dale Middleton gives us a uncharacteristically restrained take on ‘Mists of Dawn’. His version drops the tempo a little, and works Bastards of Funk and Sonic Union’s beautiful melodies over a flowing, fluid progressive sound, which raises the original’s bassline into a sweeping countermelody. The result is both groovier and dreamer than the original, and it’s my pick of the two. If you like this, by sure to check out his new single on Lowbit, coming out on Monday.

This is another lovely little release from Bastards of Funk and Sonic Union, though for my money Dale Middleton’s remix gives the track that little bit extra. Nice stuff once again from Afterglow’s excellent Deep subsidiary. 8/10
