Mija | Flow Podcast 42

The American DJ and producer has released her tracks on labels ranging from Kitsuné to Hot Haus.

Mija’s identity as an artist is rooted in the fantastical and the independent.

True Underground 44 | Mija by trueunderground.one

Her first EP “How To Measure The Distance Between Lovers” cemented the arrival of a gravity-shifting talent, as Mija took full control of her narrative and pushed her sound somewhere utterly unexpected yet totally necessary. 2020’s debut full-length album “Desert Trash” saw collaborations with Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio), Thys (Noisia) and more as Mija further developed her strength as a unique songwriter.

Most recently she dropped her new EP on Hot Haus Recs which along with her original track “Give Em What They Want” also features a remix by Shadow Child.

As a DJ, she has a unique skill for finding tracks that blend heartfelt emotion and body jacking beats to mix sets that light up the dance floor while also being thought-provoking.

We are super excited to have this exclusive podcast from Mija who in addition to recording the mix also took the time to run through some questions…

Thanks for recording us a podcast, could you describe the vibe/energy were you trying to capture with your track selection?

In this mix, I was going for a fun/light-hearted party playlist. I think that’s what we all need in this current climate as the world begins to find some normalcy again.

What’s your favourite track in the mix, and did you play any of your own music?

My favorite track in this mix is the mega mashup I made of both mine and Shadow Child’s remix of my new song “Give Em What They Want”

Talking of your own tracks, what’s new in your release schedule, as we would love to know more about your new music?

Per usual, I’m all over the place. I’ve got a few dance tunes lined up, along with some more indie-electronic leaning music. I’ve also been collaborating with friends on their music as well, which includes some acid, disco, psytrance, and pop punk.

What do you think would be the perfect setting for someone to listen to your mix, and why do you think that would be the best place?

The perfect setting for listening to this mix is on a roadtrip with friends while on your way to some underground event or festival. OR, cleaning your house! There’s quite a bit of progressive/arpeggiated tones, which I feel always work well for me when I need to accomplish something or get some work done.

Who is your personal favourite DJ, and how have they influenced your own style?

My personal favourite DJ’s will always be Soul Clap. They stay at the top of my list for many reasons, but here is a few: They have the dopest record collections, they throw the best underground parties, and they’re the most unpretentious DJ’s I’ve personally ever met…which I often find to be a rare quality within house music. So the fact that they can maintain their cred while being overtly inclusive to all generations of house DJ’s, really proves their level of realness and longevity within the community.

Do you have a message for your fans or anything else you want to add?

To my fans, thank you heaps for supporting my music and art even when I’m going off the rails. To everyone else, I hope you enjoy this mix and if you do, please let your local promoters know so that we can party and dance together in the future. Much love x
