Sydney’s ‘Pleasures Playhouse’ Venue Announces Closure Date

The pop-up Australian nightclub will close on the 26th of March, but there are hints of a permanent reopening.

The Australian pop-up nightclub will close on the 26th of March, but organisers hint at a permanent reopening.

Pleasures Playhouse is a nightclub/venue based in Sydney, Australia that was launched in September of 2022 as a temporary pop-up that made use of an abandoned cinema in the city’s Chinatown district.

The venue has become a popular destination and community hub for underground electronic music fans in Sydney and although it was always intended to be a temporary venture, there is still sadness at its closure.

There had been numerous underground house and techno events held in the space and it’s last party will take place on the 26th of March 2023. Promoters booked to host events over the remaining weekends include RENEGADE, Control and SWITCH.

Although the venue will definitely be closing down in the short term, there is some light at the end of the tunnel for those who frequented its dance floor, as in an Instagram post the event organisers state: “We have managed to keep Pleasures Playhouse open a little longer than anticipated, but sadly its doors will close as we work with the venue owners and other stakeholders in hopes of reopening for good. The dusty old cinema needs some TLC, new funding and more approvals from the city and New South Wales licensing to stay open for the long term.”
