SHADED’s ‘Holla Atcha Boy’ is a Gritty, Forward-Thinking Addition to Dirtybird’s Repertoire

Claude VonStroke welcomes SHADED into the DIRTYBIRD family.

As DIRTYBIRD continues inching away from the “booty bounce” sonic aesthetic that has dominated it through the better part of the past decade, it’s instead looked to more forward-thinking, dynamic creators to lead it into the future. SHADED is the most recent out-of-the-box character the label has adopted into the flock, bringing a grittier form of tech house into the fray with a double-sided, ‘Holla Atcha Boy’.

The Southern Californian leans into his buzzy, analog-led sound at first, lacing “Holla Atcha Boy” with a running bass progression, siren wails, and distorted vocals. It’s the type of composition that one could easily listen to and guess right away that it had been written by SHADED. Leading in with a deep, driving bassline, light, airy synths and subtler vocal clips give backing to the B-side’s title of “Velvet Clouds.” The juxtaposition of light and heavy between both tracks of “Holla Atcha Boy” show just how far the artist’s range extends—a trait that has heavily contributed to his overall success on labels like Senso Sounds, Turbo, and SCI+TEC.

‘Holla Atcha Boy’ follows SHADED’s instant hit “Mad Stacks,” which also marked his debut on Jamie Jones’ Hot Creations. It’s his third release of the year, with a jaunt on Turbo kicking his output calendar off in March.
