Interview with Roger Grassi

Coming from the Gold Coast, how do you see the Byron scene compared to your home turf – what feels different about playing here?
Coming from São Paulo, where the electronic music scene is huge and vibrant, and later finding my home on the Gold Coast, I’ve seen how each place has its own energy. Byron feels special – it’s smaller and more intimate, but the community here truly values the music and the connection it creates. The scene has grown a lot in the last few years, and the crowd’s openness and deep appreciation for underground sounds make playing here feel very alive.

You’re known for your smooth yet driving sound – what life experience or influence has shaped your taste the most?
Back in Brazil, I was heavily influenced by the progressive house movement – artists like Sasha, Hernán Cattáneo, Layo & Bushwacka shaped my sound early on. When I moved to Australia, I brought that passion with me and started organizing small underground parties with friends, helping introduce the progressive sound to the Gold Coast. That deep, emotional, and hypnotic energy still drives everything I play today.

What’s one ritual or personal habit that keeps you connected to your creativity before a set?
Before a gig, I love spending time alone – in my room, headphones on, just diving into new music and exploring different sounds. I listen to sets, check new releases, and build a musical story for that specific night. It’s like meditation for me – getting grounded and feeling what kind of journey I want to share with the crowd.

When you think about your musical journey so far, what’s been the biggest turning point or “aha” moment for you as an artist?
One of my biggest moments was playing the main stage at Elements Festival, opening for Double Touch, Anthony Pappa, GMJ & Matter. Feeling that bass vibrate through such a big stage, surrounded by people completely immersed in the music, was unforgettable. It made me realize how powerful this connection really is – and how much I want to keep growing as an artist.

Outside of DJing, what lights you up – what inspires or recharges you when you’re off the decks?
The ocean is my medicine. Surfing keeps me grounded and connected to nature. I also love listening to music that’s completely different from electronic – more chill, soulful sounds that bring me peace and help me reconnect with my creative energy.
