Police Clash with Party Goers at April Fools’ Day Festival in Brussels

Officers in Belgium’s capital city broke up a 1,500 person gathering using water cannons, horses and dogs.

Police in Brussels clashed with party-goers at an illegal event organised for the 1st of April.

Organised anonymously, it appears the illegal event was an April fools’ joke gone wrong. Apparently, the event advertised had no social distancing rules and promised over 100 DJs playing across eight stages of music.

It’s unclear if the DJs or music stages advertised were ever planned, but people still turned up at the location expecting a party. This mass gathering of over 1,500 people prompted police to respond and break up the crowd that had amassed.

Police authorities used horses, dogs and water cannons to break up the crowd which by this point had turned into a riot.

According to the Belgian news agency Belga, several guests and 26 officials were injured. Pictures and video footage shown by local news and social media reveal police officers and members of the public bleeding from wounds inflicted on them.

Police in riot gear were pelted with bottles and fires were lit to create blockades in the road.

This news comes after Belgium last week saw a sharp rise in new COVID infections. According to official data, the last 14-days saw an increase of around 550 new infections per 100 000 inhabitants.
