Mental Health: Yotto Shares Tips To Cope With Life On Tour

Being an international touring DJ sometimes isn’t glamorous as you’d think

The reality is you’re often holed up in random hotel rooms for weeks on end (often they’re low budget, so you have to pay for your own accommodation because the promoter only covers 1 or 2 nights), separated from from friends and loved ones with sometimes just yourself for company.  Yotto reveals how he copes with the loneliness…

1) Call family and friends as often as you can. Touring can be lonely. I enjoy the solitude on the road but can’t go more than a day without chatting to some friends or facetiming my family.

2) Sleep whenever you can, as much as you can. I’m lucky to be a good airplane sleeper and spend most of my free moments taking power-naps in hotels. It is the single most important thing for your health and recovery.

3) Exercise. I try to squeeze in proper workouts at least 4 times a week. Even 30 minutes on a hotel treadmill is beneficial if that’s all I have time for. It helps me sleep better, so it all goes around.

4) Eat well. I carry a random selection of snacks, protein powder and quick oats with me. You never know if you get delayed and have no time to sit down for food.

5) Don’t drink too much. If you must, choose your battles. When I started touring it felt like a long honeymoon with the whole concept of free alcohol and endless parties. That got very old very fast so now I only drink on special occasions. I also feel a stronger connection to my music when I’m sober.
