Massive Attack Are Selling Rare Banksy Artworks For Charity

Donating the money to help vulnerable people in Bristol and Malawi, the pieces are valued at around £100,000.

Both from Bristol in the UK, Massive Attack is an influential electronic band, and Banksy is a world-famous graffiti artist.

Later today, two Banksy prints owned by the electronica band Massive Attack will get sold at a charity auction.

The two pieces of art titled ‘I Fought The Law’ and ‘Bomb Middle England’ are two extremely rare prints owned by the Bristol, UK based band, which is the same city that Banksy is also from. It’s estimated that combined the prints could be worth around £100,000.

Donated by Massive Attack band member, Grant “Daddy G” Marshall, the money raised from the sale will will be donated to charities Temwa and Aid Box Community (ABC) that help vulnerable people in Bristol and Malawi.

Talking about his decision to auction the prints, Grant “Daddy G” Marshall said: “When we heard about the government funding Temwa lost earlier this year with the UK aid cuts, and the importance of the work Temwa does in Malawi, we felt compelled to help.”

Charity auctioneer, Vanguard are selling the prints later today, and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall continued to say: “selling the Banksy prints via the Vanguard charity auction seemed an easy way to help raise some urgent funds needed.”

In the last 12 months, Malawi charity Temwa stopped receiving £250,000 worth of grants from the UK after the country’s government cut funding, which left the charity seeking help from elsewhere in order to continue its life-saving work.

Temwa charitable work includes supplying the East African country with food, educational and health security, in addition to aiding with forest protection, but lack of funding is putting restrictions on the work it can do.

Jo Hook is a director at Temwa, and she said the funds generated from the sales of the Banksy prints will go “directly towards purchasing large numbers of fruit trees and agro-forestry trees.”

In the past there have been rumours linked to Banksy’s connection with Massive Attack, which has got some asking if the band’s frontman Robert Del Naja could also be the graffiti artist known as Banksy. Robert Del Naja has quickly shut down such rumours, saying: “It would be a good story but sadly not true. Wishful thinking, I think.”
