Dave Seaman – Beyond The Decks
There are some artists who feel woven into the fabric of dance music itself. Dave Seaman is one of them.
For decades, his sound has quietly shaped dancefloors around the world — not through hype or trends, but through emotion, consistency, and a deep respect for the journey.
Ahead of his return to Haven, we caught up with Dave to talk about inspiration, connection, longevity, and what still keeps him excited after more than thirty years behind the decks.
Your career in electronic music spans more than three decades. What continues to inspire you and keep you evolving as an artist after all this time?
New music. Plain and simple. It still get as excited today playing music for people as I did when I first started DJing in the early 80s and don’t ever envisage that leaving me.
You’ve played in so many different environments – from intimate clubs to huge festivals. What kind of setting brings out your favourite kind of storytelling as a DJ these days?
As much as a big festival setting is a buzz to play, I do kinda prefer a smaller environment where you can connect better with the dance floor. DJing is all about connection for me and that’s usually stronger in a more intimate setting.
How has your creative process changed from the early Renaissance and Bedrock days to the way you prepare and play now?
Not that much in terms of listening preparation but obviously, there’s quite a difference between playing with vinyl or digital. Both have their merits. There’s something special about the physical aspects of records but I certainly don’t miss lugging round the world on planes!
Emotional connection has always been a core part of your sound. How do you think about emotion when you are structuring a set?
I think that comes from the music you play. I’m always looking for tracks that have the ability to make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, those goosebump moments are ultimately what people remember.
You’ve influenced multiple generations of DJs and producers. In your view, what really defines longevity in this industry?
Consistency. Staying true to what you believe in and ploughing on through the highs and lows. But at the same time keeping open minded enough to embrace new ideas and people.
Which producers, labels or sounds are currently exciting you and finding their way into your sets?
I’m a big fan of what DJ Koze has been doing these past few years, he always makes really memorable original music that stands out from the crowd. His ‘Buschtaxi’ track from earlier this year was my favourite club track of 2025.
You have a long history with Australia. What do you enjoy most about playing here compared to other parts of the world?
Yes, I’ve been playing regularly in Australia for over 30 years now and always look forward to returning. It’s a very special country with a lot of amazing people that I particularly love. I’ve got a lot of very good Aussie friends.
For the dancers joining us on Jan 02, what kind of journey can they expect from your set at Haven?
A beautiful, scenic, memorable one. I hope!! 😉
Dave Seaman’s approach hasn’t changed much over the years — and that’s exactly the point.
It’s still about connection, emotion, and choosing music that stays with you long after the night ends.
