There are few names as synonymous with Australia’s house and techno scene as Market Memories.
Sean Rault and Oliver James have been shaping dancefloors for years – each set a reminder of why experience matters, and why connection still runs deeper than hype.
“It’s a weird thing as you never look at yourself in such a way,” Sean laughs when asked about being called staples of the scene. “But after so many years, I guess these names get put against you – and it’s an honour. It makes you feel like you must be doing something right.”
Their story began the way all great collaborations do – on the dancefloor. “We were both dancing on the Market Stage at Rainbow Serpent Festival. One of us said, ‘Hey, let’s start DJing together.’ And Market Memories was born.”
From those beginnings to playing some of the world’s biggest stages – Beyond the Valley, Ultra, Rainbow Serpent, Strawberry Fields – the duo’s energy hasn’t changed. They’re still fans first, artists second.
One of their most unforgettable moments? “Closing the Dance Stage at Beyond the Valley with ‘Finally’ and having 12,000 people sing along while Oli danced on the decks.”
Their tracks have been played by some of the biggest names in the world – CamelPhat at Tomorrowland, Solomun dropping Rain Dance.
Each moment a milestone, but also a reminder of their groundedness: “We both woke up to messages from friends – it was surreal. But the one that meant the most was Solomun. He’s always been one of our favourites.”
When asked to describe their sound, the answer’s sharp and true: Bold. Dynamic. Vibey.
And when it comes to Byron, they love the freedom it offers. “Coming to play in Byron as a guest, you can get away with playing a little deeper and being a bit more experimental.”
