When you experience a set from Aureal, you can feel the years, the cultures, the rhythms and the artistry that live beneath the surface. Born Tony Funiciello, he is a multidisciplinary artist whose world spans music, visual art, sound design and immersive multimedia. From Caracas to San Francisco to Byron Bay, his creative path carries the weight of a lifetime spent inside electronic music.
Aureal describes his sound as groove-driven, playful and cheeky, always grounded in an underground pulse. It is rhythm-forward and emotionally charged, shaped by decades of absorbing global dance culture. His style is not just musical – it is architectural. He builds journeys with instinct, texture, tension and release, letting the energy of the room guide the direction like freestyle poetry.
At the core of his emotional tone is a combination of intention, intuition and a deep connection to the music he has loved since childhood. Electronic music has lived in his system for so long that the emotional arc of a set feels less like a plan and more like breath. It moves because he moves. It evolves because he listens.
Aureal’s influences stretch across continents and genres. Labels like Warp, Ninja Tune, Kompakt, Yoruba and Strictly Rhythm shaped his sonic identity. Artists such as Kraftwerk, Orbital, Underworld, Masters At Work, Depeche Mode, Carl Cox, Danny Tenaglia and Derrick Carter left permanent marks on his internal sound map. Culturally, he carries Afro-Latin rhythmic roots, Berlin minimalism, UK breaks, Chicago house, New York house and Detroit techno – all flowing through his sets with natural ease.
There was a turning point in his DJ journey when everything aligned. A gig where the sound, the flow and the connection clicked into place. From that moment on, he understood how to channel that magic with consistency and confidence. It became part of his DNA.
Playing in the Northern Rivers has brought another layer to his artistry. The crowd here, he says, is open, receptive and warm – ready to feel, ready to explore, ready to absorb deeper cuts and eclectic grooves. There is a sincerity in the way people listen. It encourages freedom, experimentation and emotional storytelling.
Beyond the decks, Aureal continues to expand his multimedia world. He is currently developing a new immersive audiovisual project with multi-projection and lighting design – a work set for release in 2026. It is a bold fusion of sound, visuals, technology and narrative, bringing together everything he has spent a lifetime mastering.
For Aureal, music is a form of freestyle sonic poetry. It is instinct, culture, memory and motion. It is connection. His work is a reminder that the dance floor is not only a place to move, but a place to feel – a shared experience woven through rhythm, art and imagination.
